Zakat Al-Fitr is a special donation that every self-supporting Muslim adult with food that exceeds his needs must pay before the Eid prayer. It’s offered as a token of thankfulness to Allah S.W.T. for bestowing the blessings of Ramadan. It’s also a way to care for the underprivileged members of the community.
Narrated by'Abdullah bin Umar,
“The Prophet ordered (Muslims) to give one Sa’ of dates or one Sa’ of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr. The people rewarded two Mudds of wheat as equal to that.”
(Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 25)
